What is the Blue rate?
he blue rate in Argentina is an unofficial exchange rate for the Argentine peso that is used in informal markets outside of the formal banking system. It is typically higher than the official exchange rate set by the government. The blue rate emerged due to restrictions on the purchase of foreign currency in Argentina, and it is commonly used by locals to exchange foreign currency. The name "blue" comes from the blue-coloured banknotes that were used in these transactions. The Blue rate offers a more favourable exchange rate when exchanging foreign currency, but it cannot be done at the banks. At the banks you will receive the official rate which tends to be less favourable.
What is the best way to go about changing money?
If you need to exchange money in Buenos Aires, there are several options available. Many people choose to use an exchange shop or a "cueva" (unofficial exchange office), while others opt for services like Western Union. While using a cueva can be convenient, it carries a risk of scams and counterfeits. For a safer and more reliable option, we recommend setting up a Western Union account. It's a fast, easy, and secure way to transfer money and exchange currency.
